ABSTRACT
When workers approach tasks they use knowledge of local conditions and contexts to manage routine pressures and variabilities to get the job done successfully. This adaptability is crucial to success and without it the business will be less successful. It should be harnessed as a resource rather than constrained by procedure. Normal operations should be used as a learning opportunity to understand where variability arises, dampening it where it increases risk and embracing it where it fosters innovation.
