ABSTRACT

In addition to a lack of statistical knowledge, most businesses are simply measuring the wrong things. The presence of safety is not demonstrated by an absence of accidents, yet we continue to focus all attention on lagging accident indicators – with a particular concern being the huge amount of time and energy spent categorising accidents. Even major organisations with significant leading indicator programmes still have lagging data as headline safety statistics in annual reports. Better indicators must be sought and implemented and much less effort spent on category management to the detriment of injury management.
