ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the art of leadership and the science of change management as it pertains to healthcare and emergency medicine. Leadership is an art. This art is brought to life by people who inspire others to think and act differently. There are few people in the world who can inspire others in a way that is transformative. Leaders must possess some raw ingredients to lead others. These ingredients are molded throughout life through some combination of experiential learning, training, and mentoring. Leaders are not developed through their ability to make correct decisions. Leadership is as much about the person as it is about his or her actions. Leadership is about taking the organization to a different place. It is about moving, developing, and changing the organization. Leading change is difficult, and is perhaps the most difficult challenge in healthcare. Change requires leadership, tenacity, and teamwork.
