ABSTRACT

A total station is a measuring instrument applied to measure distance, and vertical and horizontal angles. This is a tool that combines the functions of a theodolite and an electronic distance measurer (EDM), and has a microprocessor with software. The main difference between an electronic theodolite and a total station is in their telescope design. Total station telescope have a built-in EDM. A total station computer is more powerful than an electronic theodolite calculator. The tasks that a total station fulfills require a more advanced display. The most advanced total station has a graphic display with a touch screen. The telescope consists of the sighting and the EDM part. The sighting part of the telescope consists of the same elements of an ordinary theodolite. The theodolite part checking and adjustment in no way differs from an electronic theodolite inspection. The menu contains a special item—"Calibration"—which allows carrying out some adjustment.
