ABSTRACT

It is simply not enough for the addiction psychiatrist and the 2 × 4 Model team to limit their efforts to achieve mental health and addiction recovery to within the confines of the clinic walls. Unfortunately, the disease processes that exist within patient's brains are intensively related to, and worsened by many forces active outside the clinic, in the communities, cultures, and conditions patients live in. Categorization of the types of external forces and social conditions that inhibit recovery and keep patients stuck in destructive mental illness and addiction disease trajectories, enables a discussion of communication strategies and templates that 2 × 4 Model clinicians can use to alleviate them. In asserting its mission and communicating with Criminal Justice System, the 2 × 4 Model system should keep in mind that as much as both these systems might share same ultimate goal of reducing addiction, the means they use to this end are very different, and in some ways opposing.
