ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses the role private security plays in the personnel side of any business and industry, demonstrates the importance of background checks in private security and relates the various procedures used to conduct the investigation. It outlines specific programs such as active shooter and workplace violence mitigation programs and discusses how they promote safety in the community, and identifies special requirements for highly placed employees and managerial personnel in private security in need of executive or celebrity protection. The chapter appraises why hate crimes are so specialized and differentiated from traditional assault offenses, and describes specific recommendations on how to be safe in travel nationally and internationally. It discusses the various offenses common in workplace violence, such as harassment and stalking, and relay specific measures to mitigate these incidents, and explains the elements that should exist in an active shooter mitigation plan.
