ABSTRACT

This chapter lays out the general and particular parameters of the investigative process by commencing with a review of the mindset necessary for successful investigations. It then applies the general principles to particular security settings such as property offenses in the retail and commercial setting, internal fraud and insurance crime, and negative workplace incidents. It recognizes the proper mindset necessary for successful investigations, recalling the basic questions that must be asked in every investigation by private security personnel. It demonstrates how to apply the general investigatory principles, in particular, security settings, relating the characteristics that make up a good investigator. The chapter compares and contrasts private police practice to public police investigations, and describes the uniform practices in any investigation. It outlines the purposes of the investigative process in the civil and criminal justice systems.
