ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an overview of the historical development of the modality of group work. The history of group covers a timeline of important developments, with special attention given to professional organizations related to group such as the Association for Specialists in Group Work and the American Group Psychotherapy Association. Benefits and limitations of group work are discussed along with the basic elements of group. Group typology is also explored as an important first step in considering the creation of a group approach.
