ABSTRACT

This chapter provided a general introduction to forms of resistance commonly found in group. A definition of resistance was offered, which emphasized the general philosophy that resistance was not something to be avoided or feared but instead seen as an important aspect of the group process. A method for evaluating resistance was outlined, along with a discussion of important topics such as silence, subgroups, power struggles, and the role of cohesiveness. Specific problem group member roles are addressed as they relate to a member’s basic personality and their impact on the group.
