ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the importance of theory in group work. Specific theories, such as person-centered, Adlerian, Gestalt, and REBT, were provided as examples of how theory can be used with groups. The chapter emphasizes a personal-development model of theory development for the group counselor. Counselors should integrate their own personal values with a grounded theory to gain the most congruence in their approach and conceptualization abilities. The chapter also included a discussion of each of the authors’ theoretical approaches when working with groups.
