ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the internal processes of the self of the group leader. The chapter explores the importance of learning about self and the role of the person of the counselor as a primary tool of facilitation. Practice in a group setting is seen as vital to this process, as it provides an opportunity to self-reflect on one’s skills and areas for growth. Taoism is offered as a philosophy for considering the personhood of a group leader. The chapter also offers an interview of Carl Rogers as an example of his own reflection of the importance of self in developing group work competency.
