ABSTRACT

One day during the cold Scottish spring of the year 1838, three impoverished women—all out of work, all with young children—were seen by the physician William Pulteney Alison. Alison came from an established family and was a very prominent physician in Edinburgh. Yet throughout his career, Alison had also served as a physician to the poor. 1
