ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the design of ‘people places’, and the related issue of mixing uses and building at sufficient density. It describes environmental design and designing for healthier environments. The chapter discusses aspects of the infrastructure necessary to support contemporary life – the capital web. A basic distinction needs to be drawn between vehicular and pedestrian movement. The car trip itself may consist of boarding the car in the garage at home and getting out in the secure car park of the final destination. The garage is on the ground floor of their home and the door can be operated remotely. Industry guidance on the design of retail environments argues that: Retail-led developments are only successful in retailing and financial terms if they generate profit. Generating life and activity, pedestrian movement through public space lies at the heart of the urban experience.
