ABSTRACT

In rewriting the second edition of this book, throughout the process I have been looking back at the first edition and re-evaluating it in the light of new theory that has emerged over the past dozen years. What did I want to keep? What did I need to cut? Did I still agree with what my former self had written? No, not all of it. I have chewed over, sometimes over-chewed, possible material to be included to replace some of my previous text. Inevitably my field and the field of gestalt therapy has changed since I first sat down to begin writing that first edition, so I have been reviewing and re-evaluating my current relationship with gestalt therapy. This process mirrors the process that we need to engage in any studying and learning – we quite literally re-view.
