ABSTRACT

Originally described as resistances by Perls and PHG these processes that occur at the contact boundary have subsequently journeyed through many different collective terms including: resistances, moderations, modifications, interruptions and disturbances. In essence, they are creative adjustments that formed in relation to our situation at a particular time as the best way of managing that situation. Most gestalt therapists will describe seven inter-relating processes that the readers employ to calibrate our level of contact with our environment. This process of calibration in relation to the way the readers perceive our environment often occurs out of awareness, but can be performed consciously. All moderations have the capacity to be fine life-enhancing abilities as well as harmful rigid ways of being that restrict growth – it all depends on the situation.
