ABSTRACT

The aim of gestalt is awareness and free-flowing movement along the awareness continuum, that is being in contact with our existence and with what is at this moment in time and adjusting our level of contact appropriately to that given situation. Awareness reaches to a situation and is surrounded by a situation, it follows that awareness is not something that happens inside a person in isolation from their environment but something that occurs in relationship between a person and their environment. At one extreme of the awareness continuum lie highly-attuned sensing or intuition where one experiences full and vivid contact with one’s environment. The opposite end of the awareness continuum can be seen in those activities that do not require the heightened awareness such as our ability to hold our muscles with sufficient tension through proprioception or during the sleep.
