ABSTRACT

Dialogue and dialogic relating in gestalt therapy relates to a specific type of contacting that may or may not include words. In gestalt authors believe there is no reality other than the one they create in relation to others, and within that co-created reality, will lie vulnerability, shame, weakness that needs to be acknowledged. To be open to dialogue with another is to be vulnerable, it demands an open heart to allow for the expansion of horizons as the authors allow ourselves to be touched by difference. Any reality is emergent between therapist and client as the authors dialogue. In dialoguing with another we need interest and curiosity, the ability to communicate with our eyes and bodies and a contact boundary sufficiently permeable to allow the other to touch us.
