ABSTRACT

Growing edges and challenge come in many shapes and forms. Part of the art of therapy is to push at the client’s growing edge sufficiently to facilitate change whilst being respectful of their struggle and the ground from which their difficulties arise. Any experiment needs to emerge in the relationship in an environment that is sufficiently holding. Carefully graded experimentation and challenge in gestalt therapy can facilitate readjustment to the client’s current situation. By carefully constructing experiments with the client the fixed gestalt that formed experientially in relationship can be dismantled experientially in relationship, thereby freeing space for the formation of a new experience and constructed reality. The challenge for the client and the therapist is to create a situation that will facilitate experimentation that challenges fixed and outdated ways of being and leads to such metamorphosis.
