ABSTRACT

The gestalt therapist’s task is to facilitate the heightening of awareness of the unique meaning of the dream for the client at a particular point in time. One needs to bracket any assumptions that surface — lighthouses, tunnels, black cats and witches are for the client to make sense of no matter how evocative they may be. Working with dreams as projection is only one way of working with a dream and one viewpoint. One could view a dream through a lens of any combination of the moderations to contact. Dreams are seen as encoded memories particularly if the memory had emotional content. Dreams can also be seen as field events and may be compared to the person’s waking life particularly if there is a stark contrast between the two. Through dreaming, the self seeks to unify its alienated parts, and to resolve certain undigested existential issues and thus to be able to integrate them into its ongoing life.
