ABSTRACT

Our emphasis in Chapter 6 centers on the experiences and attitudes of teens in relation to privacy online, especially the various privacy mindsets managed across popular social network sites. We highlight privacy concerns as a primary reason for a gravitation away from Facebook towards newer, more popular sites such as Instagram and Snapchat. While social notions of privacy are still salient, older teens evidence an acquiescence to the idea that privacy online is forsaken. Related to this, but advancing beyond the privacy as forsaken position, strategies to manage privacy among older teens become less relevant, buttressed by declarations of having ‘nothing to hide’ online. Findings, including trends linked to age, gender, and urban versus rural locations, are discussed with reference to implications for teens adopting a nothing to hide mindset.
