ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the concept of language attitudes and different approaches to researching this complex concept. The chapter ends with an overview of the very few studies that have been conducted on incorporating a Global Englishes perspective into the ELT classroom. Attitudes have been defined as a disposition to react favourably or unfavourably to a class of objects, someone's learned disposition to think, feel or behave towards a person in a particular way and the global and enduring predisposition to respond to a stimulus. Language attitudes, which have been defined as being an umbrella term for attitudes towards a specific language or variety, language preference, reasons for learning a language, language teaching, language groups and communities and the learning situation, can have an important effect on the way people view others. Hence, language attitudes are clearly complex constructs, influenced by various factors.
