ABSTRACT

This book has aimed to showcase how the globalisation of the English language has raised important questions regarding how it should be taught and learned. This chapter revisits some of the proposals for change, offering examples of ways towards incorporating GELT into the ELT classroom. In order to address attitudes that non-conformity to native English norms is a sign of deficiency and that learning standard English is most useful for international communication, activities that raise awareness of the use of plurilingual communication strategies are required. Our increasingly linguistically diverse world necessitates a need to understand the changing sociolinguistic landscape of English, attitudes towards English and the best methods to most effectively prepare learners of the language to use English as a global lingua franca. The chapter ends with calls for further research in the field, particularly at the classroom level, and revisits some of the limitations of the empirical study.
