ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the funding landscape for humanities and social science research, and describes the main sources of funding. There are many different ways to fund research and scholarly activities in the humanities and social sciences. The majority of this funding comes from federal and state agencies and private foundations, with smaller amounts coming from community organizations and nonprofits and corporate foundations. This chapter describes how to conduct an effective funding search, and how to thoroughly investigate each funder, in order to make sure that you have found the best fit for your research.

Flash Topic 1. Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding has become increasingly popular in higher education as a way to fund research and other scholarly activities. In this flash topic you will learn how to identify the right crowdfunding platform, understand their policies, as well as navigate your institution’s policies regarding receipt and use of crowdfunding support. Also discussed is the importance of developing a ‘fan base’ to ensure campaign success.

Flash Topic 2. Funding for Academic Arts

While this book focuses on grantsmanship for the humanities and social sciences, much of its content also applies to grant seekers in the arts. Those seeking funding for arts practice and/or research will benefit from pursuing multiple funding sources, including local foundations and state agencies, as well partnership with nonprofits.
