ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a foundation for large-scale sustainable design. In the case of the Sustainable Development Goals, the principles follow the typical sustainability values of People, Prosperity, and Planet. Sustainable design is most often associated with mitigation, because its goal is to reduce or eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from buildings, cities, manufacturing plants, products and more. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports on options for adaptation and mitigation strategies as a response to climate change. The Paris Climate Agreement, signed in 2015, by almost every country in the world, is designed to keep the increase in global average temperatures to less than 2°C, above preindustrial levels,.
