ABSTRACT

Sustainable design at the district and site scale has the potential for integrating nature and sustainable site infrastructure across multiple projects. This chapter provides the beginning designer a little exposure to the possibilities and advantages of working at the site and district level, with the hope to spur creativity and diversity in design directives. For the experienced designer, educator, and expert who may wish for more depth, it is meant as a starting point for individual exploration and discovery. The opportunity for urban designers and landscape architects to educate and promote the core values of sustainability is very high because of the varied clients and broad types of “sites” they have influence over. Site design in the urban context, at the basic level, is the act of organizing ecosystem services to make the environment better serve humanity and animals without compromising the ability to be self sustaining.
