ABSTRACT

This chapter takes an abbreviated look at how change for sustainability is achieved. Sustainable design is a lifelong pursuit, an ever-widening sea change in thought and aspiration. Applying the sustainability values through Integral Sustainable Design on at all levels, on all projects, at all the times, and at all scales is a game changer. The most impactful scale of sustainable design can be found at the district and site scale. The United Nations, though the creation of the Sustainable Development Goals, has built a powerful foundation to achieve long-term environmental health, while enabling the initiatives to improve human health and build a more equitable society. The chapter looks forward towards the dawn of the Age of Integration. It shows a glimmer of hope in an otherwise frightening future. Humanity has begun to find ways to harness self-interest and short-term thinking to the benefit of long-term, empathetic societies.
