ABSTRACT

Sustainable designers think very deeply about the design process. This chapter begins by studying space and time to uncover useful principles for sustainable design and to develop a deeply important "mental model" of reality a foundation for transformative sustainable design. Cosmic space is infinite, the product of an ever-expanding universe, unfolding, evolving, always in a state of becoming. The amount of energy and technology used to support virtual space is quite high, and the devices themselves we use to interact digitally have their own ethical issues and environmental impacts, especially the rare earth metals required for fabrication. The complete decoupling of the spirit and value of nature meant that any moral or ethical shackles were removed and the race towards the eventual domination of nature was in full swing. Economic theories began to shift, further solidifying the belief that the supply of natural resources was endless and that growth was the primary goal.
