ABSTRACT

Issues of value and meaning become paramount for all coachees, although it is best to be guided by one principle. This chapter discusses 'values' and 'meaning' and why these have an important place in Rational Emotive Behavioural Coaching (REBC). A value is a judgment regarding what is significant or meaningful in life or that gives purpose to that life. Although terms like 'meaning', 'importance' and 'purpose' are not essentially synonymous with the concept of 'values', the chapter suggests using them if coachees don't resonate with the term 'value'. Rational emotive behaviour (REB) coaches sometimes suggest that their coachees complete an inventory related to a topic at hand. The questionnaire offers short descriptions of various values and can be useful in stimulating coachees' thinking about the issue of values, in addition to guiding the coach's work in this area of coaching.
