ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses that certification, inspections and logos with a specific focus on how business can address a range of challenges related to the certification process, religious inspection and the design/placement of kosher/halal logos. Prior to the age of certification, it was fine for companies to 'self-certify' production, but that time is long past; today, inexpensive certification easily obtained is often considered unreliable and inadequate. As a result, third-party certification inspections by kosher/halal certifiers became increasingly important to companies. Most companies already received inspection teams from state/local authorities, 'secular' certifiers and customers, but many were also unsure about how religious regulation differed. The chapter also demonstrates that although certification, inspections and logos are challenging issues, they are also critical for the communication of branded messages.
