ABSTRACT

This chapter lists and discusses important types of kosher and halal certifiers, as well as the experiences of businesses working with these certifiers. There are many forms of national, regional and local rabbinical authorities and Jewish courts of law offering kashrut services. The cost of kosher certification is not always easy to research, but the authors's research shows that certification by the Danish Rabbinate is less expensive compared to the Big Five. Generally, businesses consider these certifiers easy to work with but also expensive. The authors's research shows that generally many companies hold the Big Five in high regard but that they are also considered monopolistic and expensive by smaller certifiers and companies in many instances. However, the coverage of local certification is limited, and businesses should consider their needs carefully before deciding on one or more halal certifiers.
