ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the leadership roles one by one, to gain a first insight into the underlying leadership tasks and styles. There are five different leadership roles namely: the leader as coach, the leader as organizer, the leader as strategist, the leader as sense-maker and the leader as role model, each aligned with one of the five leadership domains. The most effective leadership style will depend on the context as well. Even when the people involved are the same, an altered setting can place different strains and demands on followers, and evoke different expectations, requiring leaders to win hearts and minds in a different manner. Besides the characteristics of both sides of the leader– follower interaction, effective leadership also depends on the very nature of the evolving relationship. "Direction" and "participation" together form a paradox, as they seem to be at odds with one another, with compromises in the middle as the only way of dealing with their opposite nature.
