ABSTRACT

For learners with social anxiety, the thought of other learners getting to ‘pick teams’ and not being picked can be highly traumatic. Similarly, being asked to find their own groups to work in can feel very anxiety-provoking – what if nobody wants to work with them? Avoid this by planning groups and teams in advance – make them random and ideally mixed-ability, and change them each lesson to keep them fresh. This reduces the fear of being left out and increases an atmosphere of acceptance and inclusion in the classroom.
