ABSTRACT
The right of all children to access inclusive mainstream education is enshrined in UN Human Rights legislation and the Equality Act 2010. In spite of this, many such young people and their families will have faced hostility and negativity in their dealings with staff in mainstream schools. While this may arise from a place of concern about meeting their needs, it is unlawful and, therefore, unacceptable. This is true of those with SEND, as well as EAL needs. Please make an extra effort to be welcoming and positive in your dealings with learners who have more complex needs and with their families. Always remember – this is their school and they have a right to be here. Make sure that all your interactions with them clearly communicate that you welcome them in your classroom and that they belong.
