ABSTRACT

Learners with ASC will struggle with unexpected changes to routine – for example, supply teachers, unannounced assemblies, sudden tests and projects can all cause confusion and distress. As much as possible, try to prepare them for any changes to routine as this will minimise their anxiety. Ideally, remind them of the change more than once in advance and check whether they have any questions about what is going to happen. This will reduce the chance of them feeling stressed and anxious and the associated behavioural difficulties that can then result.
