ABSTRACT

Marijuana prevention began many years ago as prohibition. The science of prevention had its origins in public health. Starting in the 1970s, substance abuse prevention began to become increasingly entwined in the War on Drugs. Nevertheless, evidence-based prevention methods still managed to evolve, though they were hampered by the narrow perimeters of the zero-tolerance foundation of government policy. We will explore some of the recent studies on reducing marijuana use by students as well as hear from university counselors and prevention specialists about what they have found effective in their work.
