ABSTRACT

The epistemological process discovered in Genesis provides the structure of knowing described in Exodus. Exodus explores Pharaohs’ lack of understanding (Exod 1:8; 5:2) through the signs and wonders campaign of Moses. Knowing still centers on authoritative voices who are patently authenticated to Israel and heeded in order to see what is being shown to her. Erroneous knowing occurs when characters of the narratives (both in Exodus and Numbers) either fail to acknowledge authenticated voices or fail to participate in the instructions they dictate. This same construct of knowing, carried forward from Genesis, is depicted both within Israel and outside of Israel with the prophet Balaam (Num 22–24).
