ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the role of logistics in supply networks and the way that logistics decisions can have an impact on sustainability performance. The chapter starts with a discussion of the role of transportation in logistics and how different modes of transport impact on the environment including a note on autonomous vehicles. A section on balancing the decisions in logistics that focus on cost, lean and sustainability examines the trade-offs made in logistics. The chapter then discusses reverse logistics as a specific challenge in supply chains especially where Internet-driven supply chains lead to higher product returns. Third-party logistics providers are a vital logistics link in supply chains today and strategies for working with these service provides are examined. The chapter finishes with a case study of DHL, the world’s largest logistics provider and how they address sustainability concerns in their business.
