ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the role and impact of policy and standards on supply chains and then links this to the supplier assessment process mentioned earlier in the book. Companies are driven to deal with sustainability issues primarily because there are policies and standards developed by various institutions to solve societal problems. This can relate to environmental issues such as waste and pollution or social issues ranging from modern slavery to conflict minerals. The main forms of policies and standards as they impact supply chains are discussed. Approaches to supplier assessment are explained including sustainability requirements, which is then linked to supplier audit approaches. The chapter finishes with a discussion of Valmet’s approach to integrating standards into the supplier assessment.
