ABSTRACT

Resources are listed where appropriate. The age ranges for which they are intended vary, but most are adaptable and all will give teachers ideas for work which they can do with their own classes.

Aspect 1: Self-esteem

A sense of self-worth, of the intrinsic value of self, is of vital importance for a realistic acceptance of self and, from there, for the ability to accept and value other people who differ in some way. Feelings of basic insecurity about self lead to the development of an unrealistic, idealistic self-image. This insecure foundation is threatened by any hint of being expected to accept as legitimate, and even welcome, variations of the idealized self. Thus, one of the bedrocks of a personality that is secure enough to embrace variety and change is good self-esteem.
