ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a thorough overview of the forms that Koreans use to call and refer to each other. The system of address terms in Korean is quite complex, and works in integration with the honorifics system to mark factors such as social status and intimacy. The chapter summarizes the use of names, titles and kinship terms and addresses someone politely. One of the most salient features of the Korean language is the intricate system of honorifics. Speech styles are expressed through a system of verb endings that are attached to every single sentence-final verb. The English names shown for the styles are those that are most commonly used in linguistics. The ‘polite’ represents the most universal of the Korean speech styles in that it can be used both with superiors and with those of similar or younger age. The ‘intimate’ style is frequently mixed in speech with the plain style.
