ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book looks briefly at the nature of quality management and considers some of the concepts underpinning continuous improvement and business excellence by exploring these terms, definitions and their applications. It explains why organizations might choose to work with external quality standards and accreditations, and considers briefly the strategic implications of doing so from the perspective of several factors to be considered. The book discusses some of the most commonly used ISO standards and how they are being applied across a range of industries, with particular reference to some of the people management and development standards available. It highlights some other commonly used quality standards, some of which have international reach. The book considers some of the key employer surveys available in the marketplace, and looks at why organizations see value from their engagement with the awards.
