ABSTRACT

There is an interesting accord here between the Chinese concept of Dao on the one hand and the Indian concept of Dharma (Brahman-Dharma) on the other. The distinct philosophical system that we know as Daoism crystallized during the same historical era in which Confucius lived, that is to say, the tumultuous Warring States period. The central teaching of Philosophical Daoism is to be found in two fascinating works, the Dao De Jing and the Zhuang Zi. The Dao De Jing is an awfully small work considering the great size of its influence. Within the Daoist tradition there is a wonderful story about a meeting between Lao Zi and Confucius. Daoism is founded on a deep love of nature, a love of the harmony and organic wholeness of nature. The meaning of de becomes especially important with regard to human activities.
