ABSTRACT

The current democratic scene is characterised by a growing tension, marked by the separation between the key pillars of the representation process and the idea of an enriched and more dynamic democracy. Moreover, there is an important novelty: the consolidation of a broad range of new tools and means of communication. This chapter provides an overview of the book, which examines and reflects on the new means of participation that were established in fields in which new digital communication tools enabled the launch of novel dynamics of political action. More specifically, the following topics will be examined: 1) political repertoires and the hybridisation of horizontal and vertical political logics; 2) the appearance of new political parties; 3) the establishment of monitoring mechanisms as an essential means of political expression and participation; and, lastly, 4) the subversion of rationality across media as a product of the communication strategies implemented by online political activism.
