ABSTRACT

Most instances of FD involve displays or actual induction of physical signs and symptoms. However, some people use manufactured mental illness to mobilize sympathy and attention. Chapter 3 discusses this niche of cases and the impact of feigning mental disorders. The occurrence of feigned multiple personality disorder (MPD) appears to be one of the psychiatric disorders of choice for those who exhibit this type of FD. More first-hand accounts are provided, including the cases of Violet and Gigi, who created complicated webs of lies to receive clinical diagnoses of MPD. The professional literature mostly covers the fabrication of physical illness, and there are professionals who even argue that FD presenting with fake mental illness is not a viable diagnosis. This chapter goes on to present the story of Mr. A. who created outlandish and unfounded tales of pedophilia to have himself confined to a state hospital. Natalie, whose misleading online accounts discuss her nonverbal autism, has acquired a huge following. She has become nationally known for her online videos and posts. Chapter 3 delves into the new and controversial phenomenon of factitious transsexualism by proxy, and other MBP-related phony psychological and educational claims in children.
