ABSTRACT

Recovery for an addict is a unique and individualized experience—what works for one may not work for another. The same can be seen in the healing processes of those who suffer from FD. Chapter 6 explores the range of techniques used to help FD patients work toward a path where they are accepting of treatment; it also encourages a process of honest self-management. Chapter 6 uses a variety of cases to demonstrate how combined treatments can, and have, helped individuals move beyond a life of medical deception. The chapter also considers the wider implications of FD, demonstrating the importance of support for those who were misled. While it is certainly plausible that patients with FD can heal and recover; the situation is less optimistic in the case of MCA. Chapter 6 shows that it is vital to ensure that the survivors of MCA receive proper care and support, but reunification of parent and child can occur in selected cases.
