ABSTRACT

Organizations are great at putting accountability in one place, responsibility in another and keeping authority in a third place. So, the first step is to look at the balance of those things – these are the contextual aspects of followership. After they finish something they just wait to be directed and are not at all proactive. The follower acts and then informs immediately what they have done. This is more proactive but raises two issues – the first is that people are flooded with information and second the level of confidence is not where it needs to be. The follower acts and then informs routinely what they have done. This is the best level to move towards self-organisation. The strategy is to identify and then nudge, step by step. One needs to first identify where people are and then nudge them, over time, to the next level, one level at a time.
