ABSTRACT

The basic word order in West Greenlandic is sov. Incorporation is a term for the practice of combining nominal and verbal stems and suffixes to form single words that convey the content of what would be an entire phrase or sentence in a language such as English. The predicative may be a noun, modifier, participle, or pronoun. There are several different variants of the verb -uvoq depending on the ending of the nominal form to which it is attached. The direct object of a verb can be incorporated into the verb in the same way that a predicative can. Objects can be incorporated into a much larger range of verbs than predicatives can. There are several verbal suffixes that are designed specifically to combine with a noun to convey the meaning of movement towards, away from, or other senses associated with the oblique cases.
