ABSTRACT

West Greenlandic has a rich verbal system with a complex morphology. West Greenlandic has person suffixes indicating the subject of the verb. In addition to subject suffixes, West Greenlandic has person suffixes which are used to indicate the object of a verb. West Greenlandic verbs conjugate in eight different moods. Four of the moods are used only in independent or main clauses, while the other four are used only in subordinate clauses. Indicative verbs in West Greenlandic can refer to either present or past actions. West Greenlandic intransitive verbs (i.e. verbs which do not take a direct object) and transitive verbs take different sets of suffixes. In West Greenlandic, transitive verbs (i.e. verbs which take a direct object) take a different set of suffixes than intransitive verbs. West Greenlandic has a distinct interrogative mood which is used for asking questions. West Greenlandic has an imperative mood, which is used for giving commands and making requests.
