ABSTRACT

West Greenlandic does not have a single method of forming adverbs. However, many West Greenlandic adverbs are actually nouns with case suffixes. Adverbs of manner describe the way in which an action occurs (e.g. quickly, slowly, nicely, etc.). Adverbs of time describe when an action takes or took place (e.g. tomorrow, yesterday, now, recently). Like adverbs of manner, some West Greenlandic adverbs of time are independent words. Adverbs of place give information about where an action takes place, while adverbs of direction denote the direction towards which or from which a subject is moving. The following are some of the more common West Greenlandic adverbs of place and direction. West Greenlandic adverbs of degree, measure, and quantity may end in the instrumental case suffix -mik but may also end in other suffixes or none. Modal adverbs indicate possibility, likelihood and necessity, and also the speaker’s attitude to what is being said.
