ABSTRACT

There is a great difference between deep unconscious influence and deep unconscious expression. Influence is ever-present; often it goes undetected and is blindly internalized by a conscious attitude. But expression is intermittent; it requires a vehicle. Dreams are such a vehicle, and so are most images, stories, and narratives. Every interaction is under some degree of deep unconscious influence. The more neutral the situation- a casual conversation, a job task, an effort to study something, and so forth, the less role it plays. Most personal conversations are shaped by deep unconscious effects. When stories are told and images mentioned, they are transformed messages being conveyed. Serious issues find open expression more easily in the deepest layers of a dream, which reflect the unique view of the deep unconscious system and its own constructive avenues of conflict resolution. The richness of a dream message lies within a dream's layers, but therein lies a ready invitation to compromise and to become defensive.
